Triamterene belongs to the class of medications called diuretics ("water-pills"). It is used for the treatment of edema (fluid retention) in various types of conditions including congestive heart failure and certain types of liver and kidney conditions. Triamterene can be used alone or along with another diuretic (usually hydrochlorothiazide) for the treatment of edema. This medication works by making the body lose excess water and salt without causing potassium to be lost from the body. Potassium supplements are usually not required with this medication.
